Each year in early August we celebrate the dedication of our Church to San Juan Nepomucena together with Los Matachine Danzantes de la Sierra.
We begin at our Church with Visperas on Friday evening, accompanied by a procession on our main road lit by Luminarias.
Mass is at 10am on Saturday, which includes a procession by the Danzantes into the church and then carrying the Saint to his temporary resting place at a designated home. All the while, the church bell is rung, with the bell-ringers taking turns to conserve their energy. During this procession, a rifle is periodically shot into the air, perhaps as a warning to potential disruption of the procession.
Lunch is served in La Sala, our beautiful reception hall, and then we return to the covered patio in front of the Church for a wonderful and symbolic performance by the Danzantes.
The Matachine Danzante Performance after lunch at La Sala includes the antics of El Toro, El Abuelo and La Perejunia, as well as some lovely dancing and music.
We usually wrap up the Fiesta with a dance at La Sala, which is always lively and engaging.
Here is some video of the Matachine Danzantes as they enter our church, to bring the Santo to the Mayordomo’s home. Then you will see the procession – you should listen for the sound of the rifle that is fired during the procession from the Church to the Mayoromos’ home.
